Rock the Bells 2008 in Philly!

Rock the Bells 2008 is making a stop in Philly this year on August 3rd! Tickets go on sale May 17th at 10AM. Price and venue have not yet been released but the local acts have:
A TRIBE CALLED QUEST, NAS, MOS DEF, DE LA SOUL, RAKIM, METHOD MAN & REDMAN, RAEKWON & GHOSTFACE, IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE, DEAD PREZ, MURS, JAY ELECTRONICA, WALE, B.O.B., KIDZ IN THE HALL

WITH SPECIAL GUESTS: THE PHARCYDE

Meanwhile Noz over at XXL seems to be not happy about the Cool Kids invasion. Though Emynd summed it up nicely "I guess hipster rap really is the new backpack rap isnt it?"

Killa Cameo 1xtra Interview Show

Just went over to Cameo's show on BBC 1xtra (time sensitive so go now and listen back) and dude is interviewing the who's who of the new school of UKG Bassline massive. Interviews with all of my favorite producers at the moment, Dj Murkz, Burga Boi, Witty Boy... Listen into the interviews to hear them chatter about inane things, discuss on how they got new tracks that are gonna be bangin this summer but are still getting rinsed on all the UKG radio shows. Shit is just insane and they are confirming what we already know over here. Bassline is not a fad, its a movement.

Kidz in the Hall - Driving Down the Block

I'm really feeling this song. A fun banger to roll through summer with the windows down sort of track. Sadly nothing else I've heard is anything like this at all. This reminds me of fellow Chicagoans Cool Kids - Black Mags (peddlin down the block...).

  • Kidz in the Hall - Driving Down the Block (zshare) (ysi)

Catch Kidz in the Hall on tour in Philly May 9th with Dizzee Rascal, El-P and more at the First Unitarian Church. Tickets are $15 and you can pick them up at Ticketweb and Relapse Records (608 S. 4th). More info at R5Productions.com

B.o.B. - Haterz Everywhere feat Rich Boy

When this song was first making the rounds (over a year ago?) it was a Wes Fif song feat B.o.B. now its B.o.B. feat Rich Boy and no Wes Fif. Still a great song though even better now with Rich Boy.

Beyond the Rave

Beyond the Rave is a vampire story set in England's underground rave scene. The movie follows the last hours of freedom of local soldier Ed, who is flying out to Iraq in the morning. With the help of his best friend Necro, he spends his last night in the UK tracking down his missing girlfriend Jen, last seen partying with a bizarre group of hardcore night-time ravers led by the mysterious Melech. But as he catches up with Jen at a party, Ed discovers that Melech's crowd, who are hosting the event, are looking for more than a night of fun, and that not everyone will make it through to dawn.

Mr. Virgo "Eh" 4x4 Bassline Flava

Another massive 4x4 banger from the one and only Mr. V. He is also know as Virgo for all you grime instrumental fans but that shit is tired. Its all about the big basslines of the UKG 4x4 ut ohhhhhhhhh... The main reason I am posting this track is for the half time break downs that are becoming really common in 4x4 tracks. I think they are absolutely essential in the mix and really add that break in a hardcore 140(+) bpm set... I guess thats kinda why I like the tracks with girls singing lines about dudes also cause it really breaks up the grittyness of this shit. Anyways for the real shit check Mr. V 4x4 myspace page to listen to Weekend Lover that is my shit....

Bike Porn (SFW)

Now that it's bike season again, I've found that I'm a total bike nerd. Ogling fixies with Deep V's, wondering why you would get the machined ones if you're not going to use brakes etc. I was able to pick up a Ross bike for cheap for craigslist and have been riding as much as possible lately. I definitely still need to tweak it some more but it rides well.
  • Rob Forbes, founder of Design Within Reach, recently documented his bike ogling in Amsterdam and Copenhagen. "The details of the bikes can be loaded with cultural information." Read on as Rob has plenty of pictures highlighting headlamps, seats and bike accessories in general. Link
  • Philly BikeShare moves one step closer to realization on April 30th when City Council votes to investigate it or not. Meanwhile The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia has worked with the Deputy Mayor of Transportation "to create a full-time Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator position in City Hall." This position, hoped to be filled by July 1, will work on updating the decade old city bicycle plan, making Philly even more bike accessible. Link
  • Bike Porn Trailer(NSFW). A bit old, but hey I've never linked it so it's totally new!
  • Fixie freestyle competition
  • Philly Bike Polo! Wedensdays at 7 at Schuykill River Park. Video
Whee! I'm going riding.

Scottie B Dj Class Malmo Sweden

If you don't know about Unruly Records and Scottie B yet then please go visit them. Pretty much the best Baltimore Club record label out there right now and pretty much inspired me to do what I am doing over at Flamin Hotz.

But probably my favorite producer that came out on Unruly has got to be DJ Class. This is the dude that is just behind a whole bunch of my favorite tracks. Tear The Club Up, Bombing Head, Stop Snitchin, Do It Girl

If you can find this ep buy it on site for this shit...

I know you wanna leave me
But I refuse to let you go
when you on the bed with me,
you been pleasing me
but there is something else that i need
I need some bombing head
Sweat baby and I won't leave you girl
won't let you go...

I don't have a myspace for Dj Class yet but when I get it you should add him

Madonna - 4 Minutes feat JT and Timberland

I'm just posting this cause it's an awesome video and it has JT and Timberlake.

Black Thought and Malik B. Freestyle from '94

New old heat from Black Thought and Malik B. from 1994.
Originally the last track on Rising Down (couldn’t be cleared because we did not know who the DJ was). Recorded in 1994 at WPPW radio station, peep how young Black Thought sounds.
Download the freestyle.

Download a live version of 75 bars and check a youtube of roots freestylin with Quest and Consequence here.

Young Envy - I Like Her

Another new track from Atlanta, this time from 18 year old Young Envy. Envy appears to be the next to blow up out of Atlanta with what appears to be an imminent deal with So So Def. Full details will be announced this Saturday on SoSo Def Radio with Jermain Dupri. Not content to just rap, he also owns a club in Atlanta with 2smuv entertainment as well as Envy Jeans clothing. Expect big things from the kid in '08.

J Rizzle - Hello feat Spyder

New A town banger from J Rizzle - Hello featuring Spyder. I absolutely love this song. Almost has a trance hop feel with a real heavy synth minimal beat. First two verses are by my favorite although the third is growing on me. Compared to the other 4 songs on his MySpace this is such a departure and a good one at that. Sit So High has potential, as long as you can get through the first grating verse, the second is better and the third is much better.

Meanwhile, Kanye is planning his show for the Glow in the Dark Tour and posting preview pics of the stage and his hologram girls.
People expect me to come with innovative stuff... Sega and 5151 on Dazed

Dazed Magazine out of the UK tapped Diplo, Dirty South Joe and Casi from Flamin Hotz to expound on the talents of one DJ Sega.
Philadelphia club nobility talk about 20-year-old DJ Sega (aka Robert Taylor Jr.), the city's most blazing young DJ/producer, and his crazy, scene-defining under-18 Friday night roller skating rink party, Jamz.
Read on for what the nobility have to say. Buy 5151 Vol 2 feat DJ Sega's Rockstars vs Clubheadz at Turntable Lab.

Your Music

Where we wax poetically on the state of the music industry and point you to new developments.
  • Jay Z has just signed a 360 deal with Live Nation to the tune of $150 million dollars. The deal is good for 10 years and will fund Roc Nation, Jay's buissness, man. Still not sure on these 360 deals, does make sense that concert promoters are stepping in. Wonder how long it is before advertising and other ancillary businesses will step in to create similar deals. Link.
  • ISP Music License. Sign up for the right ISP and download all you want in whatever format you want? Brilliant concept in theory. However, how do profits get distributed equitably? Its widely speculated now that any fees collected now by the RIAA are not going to the artists. Blank media in Canada has had a similar tax since 1997. Link.
  • Muxtape.com. Create an account. Log in. Upload songs, create a mixtape. Check 5151.Muxtape.com in the near future. Their blog profiles some of their favorites.
UPDATE:
  • MySpace and 3 of the 4 major lables have a tentative agreement to launch a music store. MySpace Music will be spun off into a separate entity that the labels will each have minority stakes in. The site will offer free ad supported streaming music as well as downloads. Not sure where this leaves the hundreds of thousands of artists that have built up the site to where it is today... Link
  • Surprisingly, according to reports, Amazon's digital service has not gained ground like many expected. Meanwhile, Apple is number 1, passing Wal-Mart. Link

and finally...

portishead is planning on dropping an album in the coming weeks. i have heard it in it's entirety. it is VERY good and interesting. 10 years has not dulled them.

here is a sample song, Machine Gun. Much of the album is similar to this. dark and trippy, signature Portishead, less "hiphop" flavored.
